Strawberry season is here! My kids and I love hunting for fresh berries each June, and closest place to do so is D Round Barn Berries, a family-owned hobby farm located just 5 minutes from the center of St. Michael.

The farm is typically open 7am–7pm dependent on the weather and fruit availability. I recommend arriving early in the day to get some of the best berries, and because the farm sometimes gets “picked out” by midday. Be sure to check whether they are open before you go! The best way to know is to check their website or Facebook page. The owners will usually post the day’s open hours and also note when the fields are picked out for the day.

The staff at D Round Barn Berries is very helpful, especially for new berry pickers. Containers are provided, and they will show you exactly where to pick and what to look for. Once you’ve picked all the berries you want, someone will weigh the fruit and send it home in a cardboard flat.

Cost: $3.75/lb for U-pick / Pre-picked berries also available for $5.75/lb
Payment accepted: Cash or credit cards (+small fee if paying with card)
Recommended ages: 3+   In my experience, toddlers usually just want to play in the dirt and tear up the plants! If you bring a baby along, I recommend wearing him/her in a carrier, as you will not be able to take a stroller into the strawberry field.
Other tips: Wear shoes and clothes that can get a little dirty. The fields can sometimes be a bit damp, and you may end up working on your knees to get the best fruit. Also, animals are not allowed on the farm.
