Autumn Nature Walks

Between the sunshine and the fall colors, this month is ALL about leaf-gazing! In early- to mid-October, the STMA area typically experiences its peak for fall color, making it a great time to go outdoors and enjoy an autumn nature walk with your kids.

By the way, do you know WHY the leaves change colors? Check out this article from the MN DNR, and learn something cool to teach your kids! http://dnr.state.mn.us/fall_colors/typical_peak.html

Here are some great local spots to go for a stroll:

Becker Big Woods

Becker Big Woods – Get lost among the looming leafy giants in STMA’s own “big woods,” located just west of STMA Middle School East. The views here are absolutely stunning. Check the map at the park’s entrance to get your bearings before enjoying your stroll. Bonus tip: My kids thought it was special to have a little picnic on a fallen log, so pack a snack along for one of your own! (map)

Cascades Bridge & River – Enjoy a quick stroll from the Cascades neighborhood south to a hidden bridge over a beautiful stream. If you’re looking for a longer walk, head back northeast instead and link up to the Rambling Creek trails, below. (map)

Rambling Creek Trails – Catch the trail at the intersection of Lincoln Drive NE and Creekside Dr SE and head west through the woods to experience tons of fall foliage and connect to the Cascades trail. OR start southeast from the cul-de-sac on Meadowlark Road and follow the path to the St. Michael Recreation Center to enjoy a playground at the end! (map)

Beebe Lake Regional Park – You probably know Beebe Lake for its busy beach in the summertime, but in the fall it transforms into a peaceful, colorful park with a series of trails that are perfect for leaf-gazing. (map)

Winter Park – Never mind the name, this Albertville park is MOST beautiful during the fall! As a bonus, Winter Park is actually two parks in one—follow the “secret” path through the woods to discover a second, hidden playground. (map)

Crow-Hassan Park Reserve – Jump onto the trail at Territorial Road just across from the Crow Hassan dog park. (map) If you’re feeling adventurous, the Crow-Hassan hiking loop will turn your “walk” into a 6-mile adventure. (trail details)
